Activities in Grandtully and Strathtay

Golf

Strathtay Golf Course was established in 1909 and had its centenary in 2009. It is a wooded parkland course with a mixture of flat holes and some reasonably hilly ones. There are some particularly challenging holes where local knowledge is Visitors Welcomeessential! It has been upgraded to allow playing as an 18 hole course and the views from the sixth and eighth tees are worth the green fee alone. Fees are subject to annual change but are around £15 for an adult ticket and £5 for a junior ticket. Discounts apply for juniors. Cycling

Strathtay is on Route 7 of the national cycle network (Lochs and Glens) and there are many opportunities for on and off road cycling in the surrounding area. A good map showing the on and off road routes in the area is the "Cycling in Highland Perthshire Map" available at any Perthshire tourist office. More recently Strathtay has become part of the route of the Etape Caledonia, the UK's only closed road cycle event. An excellent place to hire bicycles is Escape Route in Pitlochry.

Walking

Highland Perthshire is known for its natural beauty and wildlife. Grandtully and Strathtay have an abundance of both to see whilst walking. There are many walks in the area that Strathtay can be a base for. Grandtully and Strathtay form part of the Rob Roy Way and for those who just want to do part of the route, there is an overhill track from Strathtay to Pitlochry near the golf course. The core parth network also allows one to walk from Grandtully to Aberfeldy along the site of the old railway track.

Water Sports

Grandtully and Strathtay sit on the River Tay close to the Grandtully rapids and there are a number of rafting companies offering the thrill of conquering the rapids. Grandtully is also an important venue and training ground for the Scottish Canoe Association and they operate a campsite at Grandtully. Some of the local water sports companies offering rafting and other outdoor activities are Splash and Nae Limits. A number of outdoor activities are operated by Legend Sailing, including sailing courses on Loch Tay.

Fishing

Fishing permits for trout and salmon fishing are available from Wades Newsagent, Aberfeldy (01887 829512). The permit costs are around £20 a year (including trout and salmon) for locals and includes the pools at Pitcastle, Grandtully and Findynate. There are currently no day permits in operation.

The trout season runs from 15 March to 6 October and the salmon season runs from 15 January to 15 October. An Associate membership category is also available which includes the above pools plus Bolfracks and Aberfeldy. It costs around £30 for the year and is for all fishing except salmon and seatrout.

Shops

In Grandtully there is the excellent Iain Burnett - The Highland Chocolatier, which has already won many awards since opening in 2006. Clients include Gleneagles Hotel and Harvey Nichols. The speciality is the award winning velvet truffle. Attached to the Highland Chocolatier is Legends of Grandtully coffee shop and fine gifts which has also developed a great reputation within the area.

Strathtay Store's is the village store and post office and sells a huge variety of goods. It also has an ATM and photocopier. It's opening hours are Monday to Saturday 7.45am to 6pm and on Sundays 9am to 4pm. The Post Office is open 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.
